Napoleonic Siege Mortar Ball – Cannon Ball

A large Siege Mortar Cannon Ball, measuring approx 280mm diameter with a 30mm Fuze hole and wall thickness of approx 40mm. Weight is around 50Kg.

These balls were filled with black powder and a primitive timer fuze and used in the siege mortar. More information is available here with pictures of this cannon ball:

This ball dates from the Napoleonic era and was recovered from the Comines Canal near Ypres town centre in Belgium by archaeologists. The cannon ball is unfired and is thought to of fallen off a barge while loading in the canal docks and lain undisturbed in the mud and sediments of the canal. The cannon ball is well preserved without any signs of serious corrosion and has the two lifting rings attached as shown.

This cannon ball is Museum Quality and is rare in that the lifting rings are complete.
